If you’ve got ants showing up in your kitchen, bathroom, or along your baseboards, you’re not the only one dealing with it. We see this every day in homes across Cumming, Alpharetta, Roswell, and Johns Creek.
At got bugs?, we’ve been helping North Atlanta homeowners solve ant problems since 2006. We’re family-owned, local, and we’ve seen just about every version of an ant infestation you can imagine. Some are minor. Some have been building for months before anyone notices.
Here’s what’s actually going on when ants show up—and why they’re so hard to get rid of.
Why Are Ants in My House?
There’s always a reason ants come inside. Usually, it’s not just one thing.
In homes around North Atlanta, we most often see ants come in because:
- They found food: Even a few crumbs or a sticky spot on the counter is enough to attract them.
- There’s moisture: Leaks under sinks, damp areas around bathrooms, or excess humidity can draw ants inside.
- Weather pushed them in: Heavy rain or hot, dry conditions often force ants to look for shelter indoors.
Once one ant finds something, it leaves a trail. The rest follow it right in.
That’s why it can feel like they showed up all at once.
Common Ants We See Around North Atlanta
The type of ant matters more than most people think.
Most homeowners don’t know exactly which one they’re seeing—and that’s completely normal. The important part is figuring it out so the problem can be handled the right way.
Not Sure What Kind of Ants You’re Seeing?
Here’s how it usually plays out in real homes:
- Tiny ants in the kitchen or bathroom: Usually small indoor ants like odorous house ants. They’re after food and moisture. (We’ll help you figure out exactly which ones.)
- Bigger ants, especially near walls or windows: Often carpenter ants, especially if there’s moisture involved.
- Ants with wings inside the house: Several ant species in Georgia produce winged reproductive ants (swarmers), which leave the colony to start new ones. On their own, that’s normal—but winged ants are often confused with termite swarmers, so it’s worth having them identified.
Why Ants Keep Coming Back
This is where most people get stuck.
You treat the ants you see, and it works—for a few days. Then they’re back again.
That’s because:
- You’re only hitting the ants out in the open
- The colony is still active somewhere else
- In many homes, there’s more than one colony involved
So the activity stops temporarily, but the problem never actually gets solved.
We see this a lot—here’s a deeper look at why that happens: Why Ant Infestations Keep Coming Back After You Spray
What Actually Works for Ant Control
To get control of ants, you have to deal with the colony itself.
That means:
- Figuring out exactly what type of ant you’re dealing with
- Finding where they’re nesting (which isn’t always obvious)
- Treating in a way that reaches the source—not just the surface
This is where most quick fixes fall short. They don’t go deep enough to stop the problem.

Professional Ant Control in North Atlanta
This is where most homeowners see the difference.
Ant control in North Atlanta isn’t about spraying where you see activity. It’s about solving what’s behind it—and that’s what our residential pest control service does.
When we come out, we:
- Identify the exact ant species
- Track where they’re entering and nesting
- Treat the colony directly—not just the visible ants
- Put protection in place so new colonies don’t move in
This is how you go from “ants keep coming back” to not seeing them at all.
Our ongoing Healthy Home Protection plans aren’t just for ants, either. We protect homes and families from a variety of household pests including cockroaches, spiders, and mice, so you’re not dealing with a new problem a few months later.
If the colony isn’t eliminated, the problem isn’t solved—and that’s where professional treatment makes the difference.
When It’s Time to Call got bugs?
If you’re seeing ants:
- every day
- in more than one area of the house
- or coming back after you’ve already tried to deal with them
…it’s usually a sign the colony is established—and getting harder to control without the right treatment.
At that point, it’s worth scheduling an inspection. We’ll send out a licensed pro to identify the ant species, find where they’re coming from, and take care of the problem at the source.
Ant Questions We Hear All the Time
Do ants mean my home is dirty?
No. Ants are just looking for food, water, or shelter—and even clean homes have all three. A few crumbs, a small spill, or a little moisture is enough to attract them. We see plenty of well-kept homes with ant problems.
Are ants worse after rain in Georgia?
They can be. Heavy rain often floods or disturbs outdoor nests, which pushes ants to look for drier ground—usually inside homes. It’s common to see a sudden increase in activity after a storm.
Can ants damage my home?
Some can. Most ants are more of a nuisance, but carpenter ants are different—they tunnel through wood and can cause damage over time, especially in areas with moisture. Learn more about the signs of carpenter ants here.
Can landscaping or mulch attract ants to the house?
Yes. Mulch, pine straw, and dense landscaping hold moisture and give ants a place to nest close to your home. Once they’re established near the foundation, they're much more likely to find their way inside.
Do I need to know what type of ant it is?
You don’t—but we do. Identification is a big part of solving the problem the right way.
Do all ants in a home come from the same nest?
Not always. Some species have multiple nests, and it’s common for homes to have more than one colony nearby. In some cases, there may even be more than one type of ant present at the same time. That’s part of why ant problems can feel inconsistent—what you’re seeing in one area may not be coming from the same place as ants in another.
